Artist Campiche trades in T-square for a paintbrush - By Amanda Frink from Chinook Observer NORTH BEND - After 22 years at the Boeing Company, Jim Campiche has now traded in his T-square for a paintbrush to create colorful artwork with interesting perspectives, fun themes and a new twist on pets and home appliances. Born in Ilwaco in 1954, Jim was raised on the Peninsula by his father John, a doctor (and later, also an artist), and mother Val, who owned a bookstore in Long Beach. With a love of books from the beginning, Jim started writing stories and making sketches at the age of four. While going through the Ocean Beach school system, he made good grades but often found himself doodling cartoons instead of working on math homework. And when he wasn't trying to draw cartoons from television shows and dreaming of being a comedy writer, he was planning practical jokes that would sometimes put him in the principal's office. In 1972 he graduated from Ilwaco High School and started classes at Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore. In 1976, he graduated from Linfield with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. After college graduation, he became a substitute teacher for Pacific County schools until he received a full-time position at Long Beach Elementary, where he taught for several years. Later on, he became interested in computers and returned to college to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science. In 1984, he got a job at Boeing near Seattle, where he worked for 22 years. Now as the creator of bright and fun watercolor paintings, Campiche makes his home in North Bend with his wife, Hiromi, two dogs, three cats and four goldfish. Full of detail and bright, uplifting colors, Campiche's work has a variety of subjects, much of which evoke smiles and sometimes even laughter. "I like to make people laugh," he says. "I just come up with crazy ideas all the time. I like to look at stuff. I think that's why I was put on this planet, to look at stuff … I try real hard to be original, but at the same time to make things recognizable to as many people as possible. My work is very appealing and humorous - I am sort of a comedy painter. I like to use color a lot. My pictures really move!" A lover of animals and a strong believer in their comedic potential, Campiche fills much of his work with dogs, cats, cows, birds, fish, snakes, and insects (specifically, the firefly series). But look further and you may find a vacuum, blender, dinner table or television set taking center stage on the canvas. Also in his spare time, Campiche says he enjoys writing novels that relate to western Washington. Along with several short stories about dogs, cats, media and amnesia, Campiche has also written "High Tides/Low Tides," a reminiscent story of growing up in 1950s Long Beach, and "The Ghost of Butterfly Murphy," a story of a business man who reunites with an old friend - who now happens to be a ghost.
